In 2002 I took over the running of the UK hospitalty directory from the CTC, having been a member for a few years.
This simple scheme allows you to visit and stay with other cyclists for the night in return for offering accomodation yourself.
We used it a number of times during a 7 month tour of America and stayed with some wonderful people. We chatted about our trip and home and got a real insight into the area that we were passing through which you just wouldn't get by staying in campsites and hostels. To this day some of our fondest memories are of the people we met from the lobster meal in Maine to being shown a Moose in Montana.
The UK list is gradually expanding again and there are over 60 addresses now, however we have a long way to go when Germany has over 5000!! Other lists include Switzerland, Austria, France and America, and I am on the lookout for others.
In reality you may get one or two guests a year, in our case we had a family from Switzerland last year and we have hosted a Dutch couple, a German round the world cyclist and a few Americans over the years.
If you are interested in joining, the fee is very small as this is a voluntary scheme and an application form is present on this page.
